Bright Light

Bright Light

Bright Light is the brightest of the three illumination categories (Bright Light, Dim Light, Darkness) and represents normal illumination.

  • Lets most creatures see normally; it is the light level needed to use sight without penalty.
  • Is not an obscured area, so it imposes no Disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight (that Disadvantage comes from a Lightly Obscured area, such as Dim Light, not from Bright Light).
  • Comes from open daylight (even an overcast, gloomy day still counts as Bright Light) and from light sources such as torches, lanterns, and fires, each within the radius that source specifies.
  • Spells and effects that "shed Bright Light" produce this category out to their listed radius; beyond that, many also shed Dim Light for an additional distance, which is only Lightly Obscured.

Bright Light is a property of the area, not a condition on a creature.
