Controlling a Mount
Rules for whether a mount obeys your commands in combat or acts on its own, used when you ride a willing creature at least one size larger than you with suitable anatomy.
A mount is either controlled or independent, set when you mount it:
- Controlled mount: Must be trained to accept a rider (or be of a type you can direct). It acts on your Initiative, moving and acting as you direct.
- On its turn it can take only the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge action; it can't take the Attack action.
- Independent mount (an intelligent creature, or one you don't control): It keeps its own Initiative and acts on its own turn, with its full set of actions and reactions.
Mounting or dismounting costs movement equal to half your Speed; you can't do it if you have 0 feet of movement left. If your mount is knocked prone, you can use your reaction to dismount and land on your feet; otherwise you fall prone within 5 feet of it.
