Darkvision
Darkvision is a special sense that lets a creature see in low light and darkness within a specified range (commonly 60 feet, as noted in the creature's stat block).
- Within that range, the creature can see in Dim Light as if it were Bright Light, and in Darkness as if it were Dim Light.
- The creature can't discern color in Darkness, perceiving only shades of gray.
That's the whole rule. Darkvision doesn't create Bright Light, and it doesn't grant any benefit beyond its range. Because the area is treated only as Dim Light, it remains Lightly Obscured, so you can still see there but might have Disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight; a Heavily Obscured area (heavy fog, dense foliage, or an effect that explicitly blocks Darkvision) leaves you Blinded toward whatever is in it. Some magical effects state that Darkvision can't penetrate them; absent such a statement, Darkvision works normally.
