Dim Light

Dim Light

Dim Light is a level of illumination between Bright Light and Darkness; an area of Dim Light is also called shadows.

  • An area of Dim Light is Lightly Obscured. While trying to see something in that area, a creature has Disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
  • Dim Light usually fills the boundary between a source of Bright Light (such as a torch) and the surrounding Darkness, as well as areas lit by the soft glow of a full moon.
  • A creature with Darkvision treats Dim Light within that sense's range as if it were Bright Light, so it isn't lightly obscured for that creature.
  • Dim Light does not, on its own, impose any other penalty (no cover, no movement cost) beyond the Lightly Obscured effect.
