Grappled

Grappled

A creature physically held in place by a grappler, unable to move freely until it breaks loose.

  • Speed 0. Your Speed is 0 and can't increase while grappled.
  • Disadvantage on attacks. You have Disadvantage on attack rolls against any target other than the grappler.
  • Movable. The grappler can drag or carry you when it moves, but its Speed is halved unless you're Tiny or two or more sizes smaller than it.
  • Ending it. The condition ends if the grappler is Incapacitated, or if an effect (such as the Thunderwave spell) moves you outside the grappler's reach.
  • Escaping. You can take an action to make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check against the grappler's escape DC, which equals 8 + the grappler's Strength modifier + the grappler's Proficiency Bonus; on a success, you end the condition.

Grappling is performed as part of an Unarmed Strike, forcing a save rather than an opposed contest.
